The building was constructed between 1918 and 1919 and served as one of the Ottoman Empire's first modern prisons. After ceasing its function as a prison in 1969, the building was transformed into a hotel in 1996 under Regent Hotels & Resorts. In 2008, Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts acquired the property and rebranded it as Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet.
